In Viart Shop all products can have options assigned to them. For example a product option name could be ‘Size’, and have option values such as ‘8oz’, ‘10oz’ and ‘12oz’ etc. When a visitor views a product that has those size options assigned to it they would be presented with a drop down box to make their selection.

Options can be set up for all manner of things: colour, size, weight, style . . . just to name a few.

There are two key parts to creating options:

Create the option name

Assign actual options to the name.

Creating an option name for a product

In admin, navigate to the category in which the product you want to create options for is located

In the ‘Products in (name) category’ box click the ‘Options and Components’ link, just under the required product. e.g.

The option names, if there are any, will be listed in the ‘Options and Components’ box

To create a new option name click on the ‘Options’ link under the option name list

Option order: if there is more than one option name assigned to a product use this field to indicate the order in which the option drop down boxes will be presented to the customer.

Option name: e.g. ‘Colour’

Option control: can be left as ListBox in most situations. This will show a drop down box to the customer.

Add option values (see below) then [Update]

To add a new option value to an existing option name click the ‘edit’ link to the right of the option name row, then add the new option value under the ‘Options Values’ heading.

These entries are fairly self explanatory but be aware that the price entries are variances from the base price. e.g. the base price of a standard item may be $100.00. If the Chome plated option was $20.00 more you would enter $20.00 in the price field. The options box presented to the customer it would then list [Chrome (+$20.00)]. In their cart the item would indicate the full price of $120.00

Repeat for all option values then [Update] to save.

At first sight setting stock levels for a product would appear to be simple. Just open the product’s Info tab and set the ‘Quantity’ field to the correct value. And if you do not have any attributes assigned to that product, that is all you have to do.

If attributes are in use for the product (you can see this by checking the table at the bottom of the ‘Combinations’ tab) then Prestashop will not allow quantities to be set at the product level. Rather, they must be set by entering a quantity for each individual attribute group option.

This makes sense when you think it through. For example, a product may be available in red and orange. If Prestashop has been instructed to track stock levels then it needs to know how many of each colour are available so that it can present the customer with the correct availability information.

In short, to set quantities for products with attributes (options), each individual option must have its quantity entered in the ‘Combinations’ tab screen. Here is how you do it:

Scroll to the bottom where there is a table listing all assigned attribute options

Click the edit icon on the right hand side of the row associated with option you want to set the quantity for

Enter the quantity in the ‘Quantity’ field above the table

Repeat for each option as appropriate

The first thing to decide when setting up stock management is whether you actually want Prestashop to ‘manage’ your stock levels at all. It is possible to completely disable this function. If you do want it to manage your stock levels however you must have ‘real’ stock numbers assigned to each product.

The switches associated with stock management can be found under admin/preferences/products.

If you do not want Prestashop to manage your inventory simply set Enable Stock Management to ‘no’. The result will be that Prestashop will not check stock numbers in order to decide whether a product can be ordered or not.

If you want Prestashop to have a measure of control over an item’s availability for purchase the following options on the same page apply:

Allow ordering out of stock products – only set to ‘yes’ if you get regular top up orders. In other words if the potential delay to the customer will be minimal. Setting this to ‘yes’ when considerable re-ordering delays could be reasonably expected will only cost you sales.

Display quantity on product page – optional

Display pre-tax price on product page – within Australia this should be set to ‘no’ when dealing with a retail customer base. If your market is the wholesale trade then you could set it to ‘yes’

Display unavailable product attributes on product page – in general it is probably best to set this to ‘no’ as a customer will then be more likely to choose from the available options rather than wait on something that is not in stock.

Display last quantities when quantity is lower than – setting this to 1 or 2 can be a good way to encourage immediate purchases. I wouldn’t use this option if you only have 1 of virtually everything in the shop though . . . that’s not a good look.

Number of days in which the product is considered new – the result is used to select items that display in the new items module. The actual number will vary widely for different product ranges. For example new CDs may be released every week, but new BMWs only once a year. Adjust to suit your product range.

Prestashop has a very flexible and comprehensive attribute structure. In this article I will show you how to create simple attributes and assign them to a product.
Overview
Attribute groups describe certain variations of a product. A simple example would be an attribute group called “Colour”, that may contain the attributes (or options) “red”, “green” and “blue”. [...]

Having created an attribute group with the appropriate range of options, the options can then be assigned to any product.

Creating an attribute group

In admin select [catalog] / [attributes and group]

Click the link “Add attributes group”

Assign a Name, Public Name and indicate whether it is a colour typ group or not

[Save]

Creating an attribute (option)

In admin select [catalog] / [attributes and group]

Click the link “Add attribute”

Insert a name and select from the drop down box the group that the attribute will belong to

[Save]

Assigning attributes to a product (simple method)

Navigate to the product you wish to assign attributes to

Select the 3rd tab: [Combinations]

Select the group, and the required attribute within that group

Click [Add], and further down the screen click the [Add this attribute] button.

Note: if the attribute causes a price variation to the product it is assigned to you may like to insert this in the “Impact on price” fields before clicking the [Add this attribute] button.

Repeat the above sequence to add additional attributes. As each one is added it is displayed in the table below the [Add this attribute] button.

When you have finished adding attributes to the product click the “back to list” link at the bottom of the screen.
